The Need for Empathy in Your Life

Do you ever make an assumption or judgment about others, without having all the data? Is it possible that you have not entered their story deeply enough to appreciate their struggle? Empathy connects us to others in a way that positions us to be the most effective helpers possible. Empathy lets others know they are seen, heard, and understood, and that in itself can be a powerful intervention. Some would go so far as to argue that empathy alone is the only intervention we can truly offer anyone. In other words, empathy is a way that just about anyone can be of help to someone else who’s struggling. Individuals who lack empathy have been identified as frequently exhibiting the following behaviors:

•They find themselves in prolonged arguments.

•They form opinions early and defend themselves vigorously.

•They think that other people are overly sensitive.

•They refuse to listen to other points of view.

•They blame others for their mistakes.

•They do not listen when they are spoken to.

•They hold grudges and have difficulty forgiving.

•They do not work well on teams.
